Berlin, May 15th, 2007 - Windows cannot securely delete data. When deleting or formatting under Windows, the data is not deleted, only the directory entry on the hard disk. Recovering this data with specialist data recovery products like the O&O RescueBox can be successfully carried out in a matter of minutes. The new version 3 of O&O SafeErase now combats this problem under Windows Vista too.
O&O Software GmbH of Berlin, Germany today releases the new O&O SafeErase 3 for Windows Vista. It is now possible to securely delete personal and sensitive data under Windows Vista – quickly and simply. O&O SafeErase 3 also supports all current Windows versions and integrates itself seamlessly into Windows Explorer. In addition, a new assistant has been developed. This makes secure data deletion easy even for new computer users - and only through secure deletion can data be truly protected from theft.
The new O&O SafeErase Assistant allows the user to select from various deletion procedures, including deletion of files, directories, as well as entire partitions or hard disks. Should the computer or hard disk be sold on or given away, the unique O&O TotalErase can delete an entire computer’s data, with no need for a Start CD or diskette. The system partition is also fully deleted, so that no trace of any data is left on the machine whatsoever.
With five different deletion methods complying with recognized international standards, the user can create individual configurations, adapted to each scenario. The deletion methods differ from each other in the number and the way data is actually overwritten. As well as the standard deletion procedures of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and the Bundesamts für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI), users can also select the Gutmann Method, which meets the highest possible security criteria and overwrites data up to 35 times.
The deletion of free disk space takes care of security with regards to data assumed to have been deleted. O&O SafeErase also securely writes over this disk space and includes so-called Cluster Tips. These are areas of clusters on the hard disk not fully occupied by the data, so that the gaps left which can also contain important information are also securely deleted for ultimate protection.
In addition, O&O SafeErase 3 integrates itself directly into Windows Explorer, so that files or directories can be securely deleted over Explorer’s context menu. The same goes for the Windows Recycle Bin, which can also be deleted over the context menu.
