O&O Defrag 15: Increase Windows Server productivity and reduce costs simultaneously

Fragmented files slow down company servers and reduce their availability. Access to the disks - depending on the degree of fragmentation – is made much slower, meaning valuable time is lost unnecessarily. O&O Defrag is optimized for company use, removing the brakes placed on productivity by fragmented files, and sinking costs by significantly delaying the need for new hardware.

Berlin, 22nd November, 2011 – The defragmentation program O&O Defrag 15 is available from today in the Workstation and Server Editions. O&O Defrag 15 automatically checks to see if newer versions are available, so ensuring that the defragmentation is always done using the latest technology. This meant that since releasing the O&O Defrag 15 Professional Edition, short-term customer requirements could be implemented to offer all users greater functionality with little extra effort. Another addition to the current version are the detailed reports which highlight which company machines are being most affected. These machines can then be dealt with automatically by deploying O&O Defrag.

In addition to performance enhancements, defragmentation also increases the security of data stored within a company. Should data go missing, the chance of a full recovery is much higher after a defragmentation as contiguous files can be reconstructed by data recovery software much easier than files that are split and spread across multiple areas of a hard disk.

O&O Defrag 15 is compatible with all current Windows versions from Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP onwards. As with previous versions, O&O Defrag 15 Workstation and Server Editions can be controlled centrally using the O&O Enterprise Management Console. O&O already guarantees O&O Defrag compatibility with Windows 8, once it is officially released by Microsoft.

New and enhanced functions

Automatic Defragmentation: Every Admin of course can decide when, how and what data will be defragmented. Thanks to automatic optimization, there is no need for an Admin to set a defrag manually. It is enabled by default after installation and optimizes the disks in the background, without any negative impact on the computer’s performance. In addition, O&O Defrag can be set so that a defragmentation starts at a certain level of fragmentation of the hard disk or partition, on specific days of the week, or whenever the screensaver is active. The defragmentation can be stopped and resumed at any time since O&O Defrag can detect where the defragmentation was interrupted.

Shorter defragmentation times: With O&O Defrag 15, several drives can be defragmented simultaneously. In addition, the algorithms have been substantially accelerated, reducing the time required for a defragmentation by up to 40%.

Measurable Success: At program startup, all drives are analyzed and the degree of fragmentation per drive is displayed. Similarly, the most heavily fragmented files are displayed as well as the physical location of file fragments on the hard disk. During the defragmentation process, a dynamic block view is displayed, and with help from a before-and-after view, the user can clearly see how much their system is being optimized.

Live Update: O&O Defrag 15 automatically checks if newer versions are available and thus ensures that the defragmentation is always done using the latest technology.

Manufacturer-independent optimization of Solid State Drives (SSDs): O&O Defrag 15 makes it possible to optimize SSD drives regardless of their manufacturer. Thanks to regular ATA-TRIM commands, an SSD drive receives instructions as to which disk areas are once again free. Instead of continuing to save superfluous deleted files, the SSD can free up the areas and use them for internal data management. This in turn speeds up access times and prevents early wear and tear effects.

Arranging drives into Speed Zones: A logical separation of data into performance-critical and non-critical files is conducted through an alternative setting which divides drives into so-called Zones. Files are sorted based on their use and access frequency and moved into appropriate zones. For example, system and program files that need to be accessed very quickly are separated from other data such as documents and downloads. Fragmentation is prevented intelligently through the separation of files written rarely or frequently. This logical arrangement not only shortens the duration of the system or program start, but also prevents fragmentation of program files from ever occurring.

Power Management for Netbooks and Notebooks: A defragmentation is interrupted once mobile systems, such as laptops or netbooks, are disconnected from an external power source. This maintains full battery power for mobile usage.

Manage O&O Defrag in a network: The O&O Enterprise Management Console enables administrators to manage O&O Defrag from a central location across their network. It not only allows defragmentation tasks to be run on individual computers or servers, and all groups, but also the remote installation and updating of O&O Defrag. All events are recorded in detailed reports and stored in the database, so that the success of a task can be monitored at any time.
